Things to Consider.

Why Ocean Burials? There are many reasons that people wish to be buried at sea. We list a few here. They are often very personal, spiritual, and for some, a gift to the future generations.

First of all, many want to be buried at sea due to their connection and admiration with the blue water. It certainly has a powerful draw for many in their lives, whether sailors, nautical folks, or just in love with the sea.

Then for others, they are concerned about the environment and ecology. A sea burial ensures that a plot of land will not be tied up for the rest of mankinds existence, and will not need to be mowed using more precious resources. Multiply that by billions, and you can appreciate the point.

A more romantic experience and closure for loved ones. There is a certain emotional exchange when we bury people at sea, the act of placing wreaths on the water, expressing goodbyes that is very different than on land. We often circle the site for quite some time to ensure everyone has had the opportunity to express their farewells.

The actual burial experience for ash scatterings is to open the urn and allow the wind and waves to carry the ashes away. Some place the urn and ashes into the sea. For body burials, the casket is made up of all pure wood and concrete. No plastics, adhesives, or non-biodegradable materials are used. The body is embalmed with an earth-friendly, biodegradable fluid. We lower the casket into the water with a davit, and the casket sinks gently into the sea.

Our Armed Forces Program. As you may know, trying to get buried from a US Navy ship is a rather difficult and lengthy process. While they are happy to do so, space and time is limited. It is a difficult burial to watch, and family members are not allowed on board. We solve that issue by providing a much different experience for your loved ones. They are able to be there in person, see your casket lowered into the water, not jettisoned from a deck, and able to take a few moments as the casket slowly sinks into the sea, leaving the wreaths and flowers on the surface as a marker. A much better experience and still allows you to be buried at sea, in the region you wish to be buried. (Most burials still must be 3.0nm offshore)

One Last Ecological Statement

More people everyday are realizing the detrimental impact that the latest generations have had on the environment, unintentionally. One clear step you can make to help reverse the damage is to avoid tying up a plot of land that could be used for future generations.

Additionally, for an in-ground burial plot, the plots need to be maintained in labor hours, machines, and fuel. Over the course of hundreds of years, the impact adds up quite substantially. Many opt for an ocean burial for this reason alone.

When planning for a body ocean burial, please be sure to specify biodegradbale embalming fluid.

We also wanted to briefly mention the reduced cost of an ocean burial versus the cost of a plot, or conventional burial. Ocean burials, even body burials, are a fraction of a land burials.
